Simple Pine Branches Can Filter Out 99% of Bacteria Producing Clean Water
If you’ve run out of drinking water during a lakeside camping trip, there’s a simple solution: Break off a branch from the nearest pine tree, peel away the bark, and…

Silent rooftop wind turbines could generate half of a household's energy needs

Silent rooftop wind turbines could generate half of a household's energy needs
Quote:

Small wind turbines scaled to the right size for residential and urban areas have so far lived in the shadows of their larger wind-farm-sized counterparts. The power output has been too low for a reasonable return on investment through energy savings and the noise they produce is louder than most homeowners can deal with.

A Dutch renewable energy start-up called The Archimedes is working to solve both of those problems in a new class of small-scale wind turbine -- one that is almost silent and is far more efficient at converting wind into energy. The company states that the Liam F1 turbine could generate 1,500 kWh of energy per year at wind speeds of 5m/s, enough to cover half of an average household's energy use.

When used in combination with rooftop solar panels, a house could run off grid. "When there is wind you use the energy produced by the wind turbine; when the sun is shining you use the solar cells to produce the energy," The Archimedes CEO Richard Ruijtenbeek said.

The Liam's blades are shaped like a Nautilus shell. The design allows it to point into the wind to capture the most amount of energy, while also producing very little sound. The inventor of the turbine Marinus Mieremet says that the power output is 80 percent of the theoretical maximum energy that could be harnessed from the wind.

“Generally speaking, there is a difference in pressure in front and behind of the rotor blades of a windmill. However, this is not the case with the Liam F1. The difference in pressure is created by the spatial figure in the spiral blade. This results in a much better performance. Even when the wind is blowing at an angle of 60 degrees into the rotor, it will start to spin. We do not require expensive software: because of its conical shape, the wind turbine yaws itself automatically into the optimal wind direction. Just like a wind vane. And because the wind turbine encounters minimal resistance, he is virtually silent," said Mieremet.

Woods Camping   Jewel weed crushed and applied, at first contact with poison ivy. If In its natural surroundings, Native Americans said that the Great Spirit put the remedy next to the problem.

In your yard while gardening or trimming,  you might run into some wild plants left behind, so no Jewel weed would be handy!Calcium and huge quantities of Vitamin C, help to alleviate.Pantothenic  acid should be increased immediately .Local application of vitamin E reduces pain.Lets Get Well, by Adelle Davis , page 164Twice in my life away from main forests, I had gotten poison oak  from the shrub  real bad! First time It was via an insect sting, as they had sucked on the leaves them selves.! Second time it was in touching the plant root with out knowing while gardening. A Hospital Nurse said to swim in  Ocean, as the salt water would heal it. So now days far away from any Ocean, I mix water with salt as a wash and let it dry on my skin for its healing. Along with the other help I mentioned. Now if I had wild Jewel weed at hand there would be no attacking poison to worry over.

Dale Carson: Eat Your Weeds

Both the violet’s flower and leaves are edible.Fresh fiddlehead fern buds

Quote:

Each season brings a bounty of selections. Just to name a few: spring ramps, fiddleheads, lamb’s quarters, milkweed shoots, violets, chickweeds, the mustards and the cat-tails all poke their little selves up through the warming earth.

Late spring brings sorrel, varieties of cress, daylilies, purslane, wild strawberry and all the other wild berries through June and July.

Later in summer and into fall more berries, mushrooms, wild grapes, cranberries, wild carrot, burdock, sumac, ginger and other free meals and medicines can be harvested.

Dandelions growing wild in a garden in Portland, Oregon (Courtesy of foodblog.com.au)
Knowledge is key. Follow one of the many very good identification guides with pictures. Do not attempt to pick by yourself—find a learned mentor. This is especially true for mushrooms. With all wild things, be wary and certain. For example, even dandelions picked along a road with heavy traffic can be contaminated by pollutants. There are many geographic locations in Indian Country and this “walk on the wild side” includes the desert delights: Southeast, Northwest, Plains and here in the Northeast.

My personal favorites are fiddleheads, dandelion, violets, ramps and watercress. All of these are spectacular in fresh salads. As with all wild things, wash them thoroughly.

Fiddleheads/Fern Roots

Pick fiddleheads between three and six inches. Wash well—two or three water changes. Steam or boil to tenderness, about 4 minutes. Chill to use in salads or eat warm with a little butter and soy sauce. They taste much like asparagus. (Later in the season, Native people traditionally eat the starchy roots boiled as an effective medicine for worms and some blood disorders).

Dandelion

Always pick the greens to eat before they flower. Wash well. Dandelions are delicious alone or in a mixed green salad. It is an excellent source of vitamin A (7,000 units per ounce) and also a good source of vitamins B, C and G. The root is prized as a diuretic in tonic, tea or coffee form. Dandelion root today is used in many prescription drugs for urinary complaints and blood disorders.

Violets

Both the flower and the leaves are edible. Violets and great in salads, and they are often used in and on baked goods—especially for their decorative qualities. Natives use them as an antiseptic and expectorant—especially in tea or tonic form. As a tea or tonic, violets have many medicinal uses.

How to build a SOLAR BOTTLE BULB

How to build a SOLAR BOTTLE BULB
Light up dark areas in your home during daytime using this green and sustainable concept. Recycle used clear plastic soda bottles, add water+bleach, then install. After installation this solar light bulb can provide approximately 55 watts of light from the sun!The communities who benefit from this idea live in areas where the houses hardly have windows and live in darkness even during daytime. Their solution up until this innovation was to turn on the light bulb and use electricity.
