Nationally acclaimed artist and Skokomish tribal leader, Gerald Bruce Miller (Subiyay) interpreted the sacred teachings of the natural world to anyone who wanted to learn. This gentle and generous film documents his race against time and ailing health to pass the knowledge of his ancestors on to those who would listen.

Gerald Bruce subiyay Miller was a heralded member of the Skokomish Tribe and master of many art forms, including Twana basket weaving, specializing in the Tkayas style. He began to weave around age ten, learning from the last two Twana basket weavers, Emily Miller (his mother) and Louisa Pulsifer. He was also a respected ceremonial and spiritual leader of the Twana and a member of the culture committee. An educator at heart, Bruce developed adult education programs and designed the Early Indian Child Education Project. He also taught at the Institute of American Indian Art. His work has been featured in many exhibits and publications, and he has received numerous awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts National Folk Arts Fellowship (2006), a Washington Folk Arts Fellowship, and the Washington Governor's Art and Heritage Award in 1992.

The Twana people are world-renown for their basketry skills. Tkayas is a form of Twana basketry; used to create soft, twine baskets with overlay patterns. The baskets are made out of cattail, bear grass, cedar bark, and sweetgrass. Decorative animal borders are typical of the Tkayas basket weaving style. At the time when he was the last living Twana to still weave in the Tkayas style, Bruce and the Skokomish tribe felt it necessary that the traditional art be passed on to future generations.

As a 1994 recipient of an Apprenticeship grant, Miller taught four apprentices the art of Twana Tkayas basket weaving. Millers apprentices were Leona Miller, Anne Pavel, Jeanne Evernden, and Nikki Burfiend. All four apprentices were dedicated to learning and preserving the traditional art of Twana basketry. Millers apprentice, Nikki Burfiend, has already begun to teach her daughter Twana basketry weaving techniques. With the enthusiasm of these four, and many of his subsequent apprentices, Twana basketry will continue to be remembered as a traditional Skokomish Tribal art form.

Bruce subiyay Miller passed away in early 2005 at the age of 60.

Teachings of the Tree People - Life on the Outside

Herb Devils Club Tea for those who had sugar sickness .....

Oplopanax horridus devil's club plant overview
thorny devil's club Devil’s club, also called devil's walking stick, is a perennial shrub that occurs naturally in the damp woodlands of the Pacific northwest. It is particularly at home in Alaska's Tongass National Forest and plays an important role in Tlingit society. The herb is a member of the ivy family and related to American ginseng, the latter fact giving rise to the nickname “Alaskan ginseng.” Devil’s club is challenging to harvest because the entire plant is covered with relentless thorns, but once the root and root bark is obtained it can be made into tea and used to produce ointments and salves.

· Today I witnessed a most extraordinary event in Yellowstone. A bison cow had earlier been killed by wolves. Just as we were driving past the carcass, 12 huge bulls began to surround her and pay homage. They grunted, pawed the ground and were visibly upset. Most faced towards her with heads bowed low. One male continuously licked her lifeless body. This circle of grief went on for half an hour. They mourned her death. Then, one by one, each slipped away. A professional photographer near us explained only few animal groups pay tribute to their dead in this way. One other is elephants. We all sat in silence and watched. It was a sacred, moving, somber and beautiful moment.

Here's to all the mothers who took her kid's friends under her wing, those moms who recognized the motherless and filled a void, the ones who set an extra place at their table without saying a word. I didn't have an easy childhood, but I did have a few of these women in my life. They not only served as a mother to their own kids, but shared that love in ways I could never thank them enough. Happy Mother's Day to all those women who went above and beyond for a kid that strayed into their home from time to time.
