We Shall Overcome - the True history of Native People & America

Thanksgiving to 'Redskins' - Dispelling American Myths That Hide Native Genocide // Empire_File011

Published on Nov 25, 2015
Each November, Americans celebrate a mythical version of U.S. history. Thanksgiving Day's portrayal of the experience of Native Americans under the boot of settler-colonialism is one of the Empire's most cherished falsehoods.

To hear about the true story of native peoples' plight - from genocide to reeducation - Abby Martin interviews Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, renowned indigenous scholar and activist, about her most recent book "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States."

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY PAISAN / 2006

Quote Buffalohair : Buffalohair NativeVue IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY PAISAN
Nov 16, ’08 6:31 PM
for everyone

There are some sickening facts about the oil industry that many people just don’t hear about. Like the fact the USA is a major exporter of oil even in light of this so called energy crunch. The fact we have a leader and politicians on both the Democratic and Republican Parties heavily invested in industries that are bankrupting this nation should be a red flag. The fact this war is lining the pockets of these people has effectively neutralized the voice of the people since we are being swindled with double speak and at the pump. And it’s all about the money.

Industry officials were gambling on the public’s reaction to 100 dollars a barrel of crude while using the excuses they have been using, excuses that even the Clinton administration did not fully except. Granted the Clinton's are well invested in oil now. When in history did any speculation or hurricane effect prices so much? Only under Bush. It is only a coincidence that Dick Cheney is the CEO of Halliburton, the one US company that is gleaning a very handsome profit. The price, our young and the American people. Oil officials are going for broke now according to their own words since now their target price per barrel is projected to be 200 to 300 dollars.

Oh my goodness we have to do something about global warming. So what did American Industrialists do? They moved to third world countries to continue polluting since third world nations are exempt from environmental concerns. In other words, industry or corporations found the perfect excuse to lay off people and move to third world nation; exploit the people with less than minimum wage, no health care, or retirement benefits. The frosting on the cake is, they do not have to comply with any environmental laws, hence they can pollute, pollute, pollute to their hearts content and yes, Increase their profit margin and bottom line. The race to save the Earth was more a smoke screen for them to find cheaper labor with no restrictions. So the Earth still gets warmer and Industrialist are gloating about a quicker route to the Orient via the now defrosted Northwest Passage.

It is obscene to me Eskimo and Inuit populations have to suffer the loss of their traditional land do to erosion as the sea claims their land. It is also obscene that they have to be gouged for heating oil while their tribal land is striped of the oil they need to stay warm during the harsh winter months along the Arctic Rim. They were paying in excess of 6 dollars a gallon already. I shudder to think what they must pay now. Is this a form of passive extermination?

The fact American’s were gouged at the pump well before the rest of the world should be an indicator that we as a nation have been betrayed in a very big way. It is clear to see why Hugo Chavez booted American Oil Companies. He wanted his oil to be for his nation. Our government officials have sold us down the river for their own personal financial concerns. They have become traitors to this nation and now are blatantly trying to exploit the world.

This New World Order is nothing more than a rouse to take over the world simply to glean the rest of the resources, at the expense of all cultures that stand in their way. I keep telling you, follow the money and you will see who is undermining this and other nations. It is the absolute minority within this nation who is doing this. Corporations have side stepped monopoly laws with thinly veiled companies that looked different. But when you research who actually owns all the businesses, it will point to only a few corporations. Supermarket chains from all over the country and the world are being bought up by a select few as we speak. Check out Krouger, or Fred Mayer just for example and see for yourself. Purina is another example of monopolization. Monopolies are the going thing these days. And this world market place is nothing more than a sham as far as we the people are concerned. Industry calls them Conglomerates; I call them Monopolies, plain and simple.

We can’t simply blame Bush for it has been going on for quite a long time. Corporations and the billions they have spent in lobbying is the culprit and our country was sold out from underneath us, it’s as simple as that. Like the thieves in the night America simply disappeared and we let it happen.

It should be as plain as the nose on your face that there is no real difference in political parties since they both are on the take. The real battle for them is who is going to be in charge fore they all are on the take. Pay attention to what they are saying and you will not like what you hear.

This nation was self sufficient at one time. But not no more eh, and we the people let it happen. Like chickens gathering around the farmer with a sack of corn. We pecked at the kernels while the farmer was selecting the fattest chicken to butcher.

Remember Animal Farm another Orwellian snapshot of a totalitarian government? Surprise, surprise, take a long hard look at what is going on around you fore we have been taken over with out anyone firing a shot.In the stories about the time of change, nations would disappear and to our chagrin, America is no longer America anymore as Industrialists forge a New World Oder and it stinks big time. Bada Bing, Bada Bang, Bada Boom.

And it’s all about the money Paisan, Capice?

SET SAIL WITH KAPTAIN KRUSTY / July 2007

SET SAIL WITH KAPTAIN KRUSTY

I do feel very refreshed and rejuvenated though. I had a wonderful time with my people and had the opportunity to chat with my elders; yup there are people older than moi eh.

It was great to download all my visions and perceptions to someone I respected and honored. It was reassuring to know I was on the mark with what I see and feel from the world around me. But in a way it was somewhat startling to realize the full scope of our reality as we enter a more robust time in the Earth Changes. I think the totalitarian rule aspect of the US Government is the most striking vision I have to date. Just blows my mind that so many educated and astute people of this nation can’t see their rights disappearing by the day.

The media seems as controlled as ever as they help bate issues that eventually fester into new laws and restrictions, for the sake of “Freedom”. The press has showboated various crimes and blew the issue out of proportion to rally support from the masses. Eventually a law would be passed to stop such horrible crimes. Sadly, the only people this law would place restrictions on are the innocent people of the general public.

The media built up such a frenzy about those “Savage Indians” we were almost completely wiped of the face of the Earth. Propaganda, what a Cold War sounding word though.

And there is the story about a mentally challenged person named Joe Arridy. He had the mentality of a child and yes the media chose to crucify this innocent man/boy of a crime he never committed. With mastery of the English language, educated and articulate people fabricated compelling stories that painted a dark and ominous picture of this poor soul “Little Joe”. Leaders of the community rallied to insure there was a conviction of this “Retard”. Funny, eugenics was a very popular ideology back in the 30’s in good ole USA. There were even plans to relocate feeble minded people to “colonies” they were proposing to build across the country. Hitler followed this lead and took this axiom to the limits and murdered 6 million human beings. Like Martin Luther King once said “and it was all legal”.

My elders share my visions, I’m just more vocal about it all. I enjoy a good parody but sadly the parody is about some place that claims to be the land of the free. In actuality it’s the land of “Indentured Servitude” since the population has become servants to the Corporate Rulers. It’s going to get much worse before it gets better and that’s a given. There is no sugar coating that could possible hide what will soon become the obvious, America no longer exists therefore the Bill of Rights and the Constitution are null and void.

Well what do you expect anyway folks? The Bill of Rights and Constitution are only written on paper. So what if it has signatures of the founding fathers. The pathology of the US Government has always been to disregard treaties, agreements and promises. So what’s the big deal about a couple more pieces of paper anyway?

It’s all about the money Paisan, it’s all about the money. So much so, communities around the country are proposing new laws simply to generate cash for the coffers. LOL remember that line, “No taxation without representation”? Virginia placed massive fines for speeding and other infractions simply for the cash, not public safety. One bill seeks to pass a $10 tax on cigars so hold on to your purse strings.

Yarrr matey, your country has been keelhauled, shiver me timbers eh. So lets hoist the yard arm, batten down the hatches and set a course for the eye of the hurricane fore we are headed into a stormy angry sea. And it’s bound to get much worse before we see the light of day again.

Buffalohair: ALL HALLOWS EVE / 2007

ALL HALLOWS EVE

In researching the origins of Halloween I can’t help but notice how organized religions have made it a point to make sure everyone knows the Druids were Satanists and Devil worshipers. Fact is anything that did not follow the “party line” was labeled Satanic. I know many Europeans who don’t follow the prescribed dogmas of the land and they are as moral and just as can be. And in many ways, their traditions mimic our Native ones.

It’s always been my belief that all human beings, regardless of their pigment, used to have a clear understanding of true spirituality. From the Celtic’s to the Teutonic’s, Pagan religions all had a core of morality, truth and goodness. Their connection to the Creator was always festive and joyous a one filled laughter and merriment. Their G*D was loving and they honored him and Ma Earth plus everything in nature. Sounds familiar huh?

Charlemagne was the Custer of the European Traditionalist and murdered them in the name of this pissed off G*D. The Knights Templar was no better as they killed their way to the Holy Land reaping great wealth in the process. Ireland was the last stronghold and their struggle lives on. After the “Great Massacre” scribes put to pen the reasons these humble people were killed, their customs perverted and made to look evil and satanic. Their histories and culture forever destroyed as well as the true nature of these humble people. And Halloween was one of the victims whose real tradition was skewed and made a mockery of.

Then this cancer was shipped to the America’s as more innocent people were murdered in the name of this new angry and jealous G*D. Their gold was taken and their histories were destroyed. And yup, scribes began to re-write the history and facts about the Inca’s, Maya’s, the Aztec’s and the like.

Libraries with millions of books were burned, only a hand full of documents was kept to show how evil these primitive people were. And it was only to justify the wholesale murder of innocent human beings. Provided they were not forgeries in the first place. The Vatican and the Church of England have their coffers filled with blood tainted riches of countless human beings all in the name of G*D.

There are countless theories about the origins of Halloween. I used the rule of thumb on this one. My rule of thumb is, anything that uses Devil, Satan or other garbage such as ghouls, goblins, spooks etc has a core in organized religion. It was these terms that were used to justify why people were murdered and their possessions taken in Europe, The America’s and everywhere else people are killed and their natural resources are gleaned, “In the name of G*D”. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, sounds familiar. Its funny how history repeats itself.

Native’s in Mexico celebrate “The Day of the Dead” and honor those who crossed over. In an obscure piece I read that as long as 2000 years ago so called “Pagans” of Europe used to honor their dead as well on All Hallows Eve. Only when organized religions came to exist did the goblins, spooks and evil aspect of All Hallows Eve come to light as yet another sacred day of respect was made a mockery of.

Interestingly enough is the timing of All Hallows Eve and The Day of the Dead though. In Mexico it’s held on November 2nd. The ancient Europeans honored their dead on October 31st. So I don’t buy into the spooks and goblins aspect of this time of honor. I see it as yet another way to cast a negative light on the ancient traditions of murdered innocent people no matter what continent they resided in.

So I will stick to my gut instinct and honor the dead and not buy into the crappola organized dogmas fabricated to simply cover their ass in the books of history they write.

Your Devil’s Advocate…………..OK OK OK so I’m using the D word

Buffalohair: My Radioactive Renaissance A Mutants Tale

My Radioactive Renaissance, A Mutants Tale

After all the hype about the shower of radioactive death that would rain in my region of the planet I had some concerns. I was well aware that I was already exposed to plenty of radiation in my earlier years. Other than a few anomalous growths and an overwhelming desire to drink human blood I weathered my contamination quite well actually. I am comfortable in knowing that I am forever genetically altered and that my DNA double helix more resembles a wad of used chewing gum on chop sticks. Since I could not possibly escape the radioactive plume I decided to make the most of it.

OK so our environment will have more ambient radiation than before and more cancers will evolve that coincidentally resembles radiation sickness. But for all the concerns for the ill effects of radiation exposure I really want to know if I can micro-wave a pizza outside during a nuclear event. A coronal mass ejection would be ideal with all them big juicy gamma and x-rays flying all around. And if the magnetosphere is absent on that day it’s the CME Cha Cha, beam me up Scotty. But I guess it does not matter where I am when one of them puppies explodes. So I was just thinking; I’m going to be all contaminated anyway so why not have a super power.

Every situation, properly perceived, becomes an opportunity they say. Well, here I am glowing in the dark from another nuclear catastrophe and it’s about time I cash in on my radioactiveness. Maybe I could get x-ray vision from my exposure, which would be cool. Hopefully I could shut it off from time to time so I don’t view everyone in the buff. I could get a job with TSA and work at the airport checking everyone out naked. The down side to x-ray vision would be the fact boobs would loose their magical appeal. After a while butts would simply look like just another stinky ass trying to find the right concourse. Hmm, forget about it. I already think the world is run by a bunch of buttheads anyway. That’s all I would need is a visual.

I could fly around like superman or something. I would not need a car or insurance and the cost of fuel, oy vey. I could zip on down to Wal-Mart or Zellers without having to find a place to part. But what would I do with all the junk I bought at the store? Maybe I could get the cashier to double bag my stuff so I don’t lose anything on the way home. That’s all I need is to whack someone on the head with a bag of dog food that dropped out of the sky. Gads, I’ve already made my attorneys rich from my anger management issues. That’s all I need are law suites for broken windows, dented cars and a few headaches from airborne groceries.

And how would I go out on a date? Would the chick need a helmet and would I have to strap her to me like a seat  belt? What if she drops a high heel and impales someone on the ground like a lawn dart? If she had a skirt on that could cause complications. Her bum would be hanging out there for the whole world to gawk at eh. Naw, think I’ll pass on that one to. Besides, the landing part would probably not be so cool. I’d crash and burn every time I landed. I’d have groceries everywhere in the pasture. Ginger the Wonder Horse and the crew would have a field day, forget about it.

Being invisible would suck for the most part, nothing like being ignored. But my biggest fear would be to materialize in front of someone only to discover that I am buck naked. I doubt my cloths would disappear since I would be the one that is radioactive but I guess I could contaminate them. I probably could contaminate everything I touched for that matter. Only problem is contamination is not invisibility. Hmm, would that be a super power? I could be Radioactive Man, a contemporary hero of the radiologically contaminated age. I could go to parties with my super powers and microwave popcorn under my armpits and warm pizza slices with my buttocks. That would get the ladies. Gads, would I be forced to wear spandex? And well, me and the boys don’t like restrictions, if you get my drift. Since we’re on the subject of genitalia and super powers ….aw skip it.

So here I am enjoying my radioactive weekend. Guess I might as well get some chicken wings and dipping stuff. I’ll also need some corn and potato chips, most likely GMO. I make my own bean dip and killer guacamole. Hmm, that reminds me, I better make my salsa to. And I think I’ll do a scientific experiment as well. I’ll pull out a few moose steaks and place them on a rack outside and see if the ambient radiation cooks the meat. Just in case, I’ll have the grill at the ready. I also have some elk but since its radiation weekend I’m going for the gusto. What better way to ingest my share of alpha and beta particles then to imbibe in a thick juicy moose steak smothered in onions and garlic with a hint of fresh sage, pepper and sea salt?

I like squirrel and other rodents prepared that way as well. They say fennel is best for long pork. I personally thought fresh spearmint worked well with all the flavors, especially in the sauce and rue. It’s sort of minty with a meat bravado that is reminiscent to lamb…. Hello Clarice. In any event radiation and all its joys are here to stay. The Fukushima nuclear festival was simply a transuranic memo identifying the frailties and haplessness of man and his technologies. Many nuclear disasters preceded Fuku and unfortunately more will follow during the era we live, there is no question.

As I view the picturesque Rocky Mountains, a breeze with spring’s musings and Nippon’s Nuclear Noir embrace their liberty while dancing throughout my home in radiological flare. Actually I’ve come to the realization that I am a mutant because my DNA is surely altered by now. We are all mutants for that matter so it’s already a done deal for this generation. So what is everyone squawking about? Some of us will rot quicker than others, big deal. We do that already; we’ll just have more to rot about. Only real difference is our rate of decomposition from the varying degrees of exposure we’ve been receiving.

On the bright side, what a business opportunity radiation has to offer a guy with the right angle for a quick buck. I can see it now, me and my traveling medical show selling tinctures of lead and iodine based remedies for radiation sickness. From creams, lotions, teas and even suppositories I could have a radiological roach coach and sell potassium iodine smoothies on the side. I’ll move to Austin, Texas the roach coach capital of the world.

Austin really rocks……………

A Native American Thanksgiving Day Song

A Native American Poem On Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving?
Oh what a day, Thanksgiving, so happy and so free.
A time of joy and merry bliss, to feast through out the day.
Elation fills the Autumn mist, to share the joyous tide.
But in my heart I know the truth, my culture really died.
From time hence forth, from coast to coast and all through out the land.
Whispers from the Nanticoke and other Native bands.
Mark this time, Thanksgiving, the time we lost our land.

Why Some Native Americans Recognize A 'National Day Of Mourning' On Thanksgiving
“Some would say, ‘Why be so dark about it?’ Well, it's real, it's truthful, it was a holocaust,” says the head of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribal council.

It's time to let go of the myth of Thanksgiving and embrace truth, and we must start in schools, Native American educator Sarah Sunshine Manning says.

Manning: Thanksgiving Myth Creates Fairytale of Land Theft, Betrayal, Genocide
Sarah Sunshine Manning
11/23/15

As Thanksgiving approaches, many schools throughout the U.S. are making preparations for the standard, and all too cliché, Thanksgiving Day lessons, and fairy tale-esque Thanksgiving plays.

And more often than not, the school Thanksgiving activities are largely based on what ultimately amounts to myth, created to serve the imaginations of the dominant society, and simultaneously functioning to erase the tragedies of Indigenous nations.

The myth usually goes a little something like this:

Pilgrims came to America, in order to escape religious persecution in England. Living conditions proved difficult in the New World, but thanks to the friendly Indian, Squanto, the pilgrims learned to grow corn, and survive in unfamiliar lands. It wasn’t long before the Indians and the pilgrims became good friends. To celebrate their friendship and abundant harvest, Indians in feathered headbands joined together with the pilgrims and shared in a friendly feast of turkey and togetherness. Happy Thanksgiving. The End.

From this account, the unsuspecting child might assume a number of things. Firstly, they may assume that pilgrims merely settled the New World, innocently, and as a persecuted people, they arrived to America with pure and altruistic intentions. Secondly, children might assume, and rightfully so, that Indians and pilgrims were friends, and that this friendship must have laid the framework for this “great American nation.”

So, what exactly is the harm in this school-sanctioned account of history? Understandably, the untrained eye may not notice the harm in such a myth, as most Americans are victim to the same whitewashed lie as the rest, and dismantling a centuries-old myth certainly does prove challenging.

But the first lesson for educators and adults to digest is the fact that this narrative is egregiously whitewashed and Eurocentric on many levels. Moreover, it is a lie, which serves to rob American children of valuable historical lessons.

Truth be told, this beloved lie was packaged solely for nationalistic consumption when, following the bloody Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. Back then, Americans were desperately in need of unity and inspiration. Hence, the myth of the first Thanksgiving was born to inspire and unite.

Beyond the myth, and the seemingly good intentions of Abraham Lincoln (who actually despised Indians) the actual story of pilgrims and indigenous people went down much differently.

As a social science educator, I strongly advocate for the unabridged study of human history; for the many valuable lessons imbedded in the stories of our past. Changing any story, essentially, means short-changing American society from some extremely valuable lessons – lessons that function to plant the seeds of social consciousness and humanitarian evolution.

So let’s take a look at a different version of history; a fuller version, and hopefully, extract some meaningful lessons from our shared past:

One day, the Wampanoag people of the Eastern coast of the Americas noticed unfamiliar people in their homelands.  These unfamiliar people were English pilgrims, coming to a new land which they dubbed “America,” in order to settle and create a new life.

The Wampanoag were initially uneasy with the settlers, but they eventually engaged in a shaky relationship of commerce and exchange. Also, in observing that the pilgrims nearly died from a harsh winter, the Wampanoag stepped in to help.

The Wampanoag chief, Massasoit, eventually entered into agreements with the pilgrims, and, on behalf of the Wampanoag Nation, decided to be allies while each nation coexisted in the same space together. At one time, the Wampanoag and pilgrims shared in a meal of wildfowl, deer, and shellfish.

After Massasoit’s death, the Wampanoag nation became weakened as a result of disease contracted from the English. It wasn’t long before the pilgrims began tormenting surrounding tribes, burning entire villages to the ground, while I indigenous men, women, and children lie sleeping.

Uneasy with the growing cruelty, greed, and arrogance of the new people in their homelands, the Wampanoag began to distrust the pilgrims. The pilgrims soon demanded that the Wampanoag submit to them, and give up all their weapons.
Shortly after, the pilgrims and Wampanoag were at war, and in the end, the pilgrims rose victorious. At the close of the war, the Wampanoag were nearly decimated, and the son of Chief Massasoit, Metacom, was killed by the pilgrims, dismembered, beheaded, and his head impaled on a spear outside of Plymouth. Metacom’s young son was sent to the West Indies as a slave, along with numerous other Wampanoag and surrounding tribes.

A day of Thanksgiving was declared, and to celebrate, the pilgrims kicked the heads of dead Indigenous peoples around like soccer balls. (This was not the end … )

As indigenous nations throughout America were continually betrayed by European settlers, killed by disease, germ warfare, hunted for bounties, sent overseas as slaves, and ultimately pushed out of their homelands and onto prison camps (now commonly known as reservations), few survived the depressing conditions. As a result of centuries of historical trauma, indigenous nations today have staggering rates of depression, mental health disparities, suicide, and deaths due to alcohol and drugs. Indigenous people continue to struggle to cope with historical trauma, and heal deeply imbedded wounds which stem directly from colonialism. This, still, is not the end.

Worksheet clip "The Real Thanksgiving." This is a worksheet I created for my American Indian history class at Tiospa Zina Tribal School in South Dakota.

The lessons to be gained from the truths of history are many, and conversely, those lessons are lost in whitewashed myths.

While glossing over the very real consequences of colonialism, the mythical version of Thanksgiving creates a fairytale of land theft, betrayal, brutality, and genocide, virtually functioning to erase the very real and traumatic experiences of entire indigenous nations. This phenomena of whitewashing and outright erasure of indigenous history, in many instances, is not only inhumane and oppressive to the indigenous people, but it is also unfair to all Americans who stand to learn from rich and equally tragic history.

Without question, colonialism is great for the colonizer, and disastrous for the colonized. Colonization reduces entire populations, and leaves generational wounds that linger stubbornly for centuries. This is a lesson that all Americans must heed.

As a result of propagating the mythical version of Thanksgiving, American children and adults alike, become confused about history, and moreover the Thanksgiving lie outright prevents a collective American understanding of the contemporary struggles of Native American people today.

Without understanding the 500 years of colonial impact on indigenous people, scores of bigoted attitudes have emerged, as Americans cannot seem to wrap their heads around the many struggles of tribal communities today that stem directly from colonization.

To be sure, the Thanksgiving myth has many consequences, and aside from breeding ignorance and reinforcing bigotry, the myth silences the already marginalized indigenous people, who desperately need to hear, share, and tell our story as a part of the healing process.

It is time to let go of the myth and embrace truth, and we must start in schools, where young children look to their teachers with inquisitive eyes as the all-knowing authorities.

As educational institutions, schools must be progressive in bravely moving toward truth, while moving away from any semblance of ongoing myth-sanctioning.

This change is long overdue, and all of our children deserve truth, meaningful lessons, and a robust dose of humanitarian development. And the great news is: our entire world stands to benefit from it.

Depending on the age of students, different degrees of the story can and should be told. Educators can find ideas here.

And conversely, the myth, the school plays, and the story of happy Indians and friendly pilgrims needs to be abandoned, wholesale. This leveling out of myth creates space for new conversations and lessons of unity, and deeper understandings of what it truly means to be a good human being, and that is something to be thankful for.
